About Iliad

Iliad MD is a free, open-source (MIT) markdown editor for macOS. You write one document at a time, with small AI help that never takes over. There is inline completion, a ✦ AI menu for selected text and a local corrector. Iliad is also where you review what an AI agent such as Claude Code or Codex wrote in your folder. Every change appears in the document, chunk by chunk, and you keep or restore it. There is no chat panel and no built-in agent. Your writing lives in plain .md files on your disk, and comments are a plain companion file next to each document. Built-in AI is included free with a daily limit, or runs on your own Groq API key. Iliad requires macOS 12+ on Apple Silicon.

What Iliad is

Iliad is a writing tool. It is not a knowledge base or a chat window. You get one calm editor where markdown renders as you type, with small AI help at the cursor and on a selection. Nothing changes until you accept it. Larger AI work belongs to the agent you already use, such as Claude Code or Codex. The agent edits the files, and Iliad shows every change in the document so you can keep or restore it, chunk by chunk. Your text leaves your machine only when you ask for a suggestion or an ✦ AI action. Then only the passage you are working on goes to Groq, either free through Iliad's server, which keeps none of it, or directly on your own key.

The folder on disk is the whole thing. No vault, no proprietary format, no cloud copy. Open the same files in Obsidian, in vim, in Claude Code, in whatever comes after Iliad. You own your files, and you choose your AI.

It is early. This is version 0.x, it runs only on macOS with Apple Silicon, and the free built-in AI has a daily limit (your own Groq key removes it). The source is public, so you can read exactly what it does.

Who builds it

Iliad is built by Sebastián Marambio, founder of Iliad and of Circles Learning (Palo Alto). He previously worked at Chile's Ministry of Education innovation center and consulted for the OECD's Centre for Educational Research and Innovation. He writes and builds in English and Spanish.
