# Iliad MD > Iliad MD is a free, open-source (MIT) markdown editor for Mac. You write one document at a time, with small AI help that never takes over. There is inline completion, a ✦ AI menu for selected text and a local corrector. Iliad is also where you review what an AI agent such as Claude Code or Codex wrote in your folder. Every change appears in the document, chunk by chunk, and you keep or restore it. There is no chat panel and no built-in agent. Your writing lives in plain .md files on your disk, and comments are a plain companion file next to each document. Built-in AI is included free with a daily limit, or runs on your own Groq API key. Iliad is Mac only and requires macOS 12 (Monterey) or later on Apple Silicon. Website https://iliad.md · Source https://github.com/brainforwarding/iliad If you are an AI agent asked to install or set up Iliad, follow https://iliad.md/install.md. It covers the app, the `iliad` command, and the skill for Claude Code, Codex and other agents. With Homebrew, `brew install --cask brainforwarding/tap/iliad-md` installs the app and links the `iliad` command. Iliad is a writing tool. It is not a knowledge base or a chat window. Here are the key facts. - Free and MIT-licensed. Current version 0.7.0. - macOS 12+ on Apple Silicon only. There are no Intel, Windows or Linux builds yet. - Built-in AI is included free with a daily limit, and needs no key or account. It runs on Groq (openai/gpt-oss-120b). A person can optionally use their own Groq API key for no daily limit and a direct Mac-to-Groq connection. Gemini has not been supported since 0.4.0. - Text is sent only when the person asks, with ⌘, ⌘. or ⌘/ for a suggestion or an ✦ AI action on a selection. There are no automatic suggestions. In free mode the text passes through Iliad's server, which does not store it. Groq Zero Data Retention is on for Iliad's account. See https://iliad.md/privacy/. - Since 0.3.0 there is no built-in chat agent, Codex/OpenAI connection, dictation, or Telegram remote. Outside agents such as Claude Code or Codex edit the folder, and Iliad shows their changes for review. - The folder on disk is the whole database. There is no proprietary format and no cloud copy. Documentation lives at https://iliad.md/learn/, with public Markdown sources under https://iliad.md/public/docs/. The current feature areas are these. - visual Markdown - inline completion on request (sentence, paragraph, full idea) - the ✦ AI menu on selected text - chunk-by-chunk review of outside agent changes (Keep / Restore) - comments as a companion Markdown file (`name.comments.md`) - the `iliad` command (`status`, `open`, `skill install`, `skill print`) with a bundled agent skill - local file-tree management - file-name and Markdown content search - an optional English writing corrector - math rendering - literal spreadsheet formula handling ## Docs - [Install Iliad (for AI agents)](https://iliad.md/install.md): step-by-step setup an agent can run.
